• Multiplication What is Multiplication?

Multiplication

Look at the balloons.

To find out how many balloons there are you could use repeated addition

4 red + 4 green + 4 blue = 12 balloons

Since all the groups are equal, you could use multiplication.  You have 3 groups of 4:

3 X 4 = 12 balloons

  • The numbers multiplied together are called factors
  • The answer is called the product
  • In the multiplication sentence above, 3 and 4 are factors and 12 is the product.
