The 2008 Congressional Academy is a program unlike any other that will lead current high school juniors in a careful study of the pivotal turning points in American history memorialized by the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and the "I Have a Dream" speech. Participating students will spend two weeks in Washington, DC, with day trips to Philadelphia and Gettysburg, studying the American Revolution and Founding, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights movement. The Academy will thereby expose participants to the ideas and arguments that shaped these three great American epochs, the documents that make up our history, and the places where the history was made. During their stay, participants will be surrounded by the streets and halls, the battlefields, public places, and private lodgings where the history we are studying took place.

All hotel, meal and tour expenses are paid by the Academy and each student will receive a $250 travel stipend.  Students will receive 3 hours of college credit from Ashland University. This credit can be used toward a degree offered by Ashland University or may be transferred to another institution.

Two students will be accepted from each state.  The deadline for applications is April 1 so please don't hesitate to spread the word.  The application is available on-line at:

Governor Crist Announces Florida Sunshine Week Essay Contest for Grades 9-12

Governor Charlie Crist recently announced Florida’s Sunshine Week "Government in the Sunshine" Web site and invited Florida public school students in grades 9-12 to participate in the Florida Sunshine Week essay contest.  Sunshine Week, March 16-22, 2008, celebrates the State of Florida’s dedication to making state and local government more accessible to the public.

About the Essay Contest

The essay contest is open to all Florida public school students in grades 9-12 and the winner will be announced March 18, 2008.  The first place winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, the second place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship, and third place will receive a $1,500 scholarship.  All winners will receive recognition at an event at the Governor’s Mansion.  Essays should answer the question, "What role does open government play within a democratic society and a democratic government?"

Guidelines

Each student may enter only one essay, no longer than 500 words and typed or handwritten in print, rather than cursive writing. Essays must include the student’s name, home address, telephone number, school the student attends, grade level and essay title.  Essays must be accompanied by a parental waiver form.  All entries must be received or postmarked by 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday, March 3, 2008.

For more information and to access parental waiver forms, visit http://www.flgov.com/og_sunshine_essay.

Due to the PSAT testing date/time, I will be once again changing the date for the Vocab Test 3.  The new date will be Monday 10/22/07.  This will still allow us to get the test in before the end of the nine weeks.

<>Congratulations to Vinny Parra ('08) and Nicole Cardenas ('08) for their show in the 2007 Ayn Rand Essay Contest!  Vinny is a finalist and was awarded $100; Nicole is a semi-finalist and was awarded $50 - great job! The list of winners is available on the Ayn Rand Institute web site.

The entries for Franklin's Autobiography are due before July 16th.  Please contact me if you have any ideas for Topics that you'd like to begin.

All incoming 2007-2008 Advanced Placement Language students must attend a meeting after school at 2:45 P.M. in Room 706 on Thursday, May 24, 2007.

The meeting is MANDATORY.  However, it will not last long - perhaps 15 minutes.

Please arrive on time, so that we can handle all of our business quickly.

I will be asking all students to provide me with an email address where they can be reached over the summer.  Be sure to have that information with you.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide you with instructions for your summer assignment.  This information is critical, as it will affect your grade in the class.
