Pass The Poems, Please
by Jane Baskwill

Pass the poems please
 Pile them on my plate
Put them right in front of me
 For I can hardly wait
 To take each tangy word
 To try each tasty rhyme
And when I've tried them once or twice
I'll try them one more time:
 So pass the poems please
They just won't leave my head
I have to have more poems
 Before I go to bed.

Goodbye vacation!
Hello to school!
Hello new classmates,
Goodbye old pool.
Vacation time's over,
School time is here,
Once more we welcome

Out on the Playground

Playing on the playground is a treat,
Climbing and sliding can't be beat!
The playground is where we like to play,
It is fun each and every day.
Fun, fun, fun, we like to run.
Fun, fun, fun, ‘til we are done.
The playground is where we like to play,
It is fun each and every day.

by Risa Jordan

A friend is a person who wishes you well
And keeps all the secrets that you like to tell.
Friends share their toys and their storybooks too.
Friends can be older or younger than you.
Friends can be real or made up in your mind
But they're always thoughtful and always kind.
Friends can live nearby or very, very far
But your friends are your friends wherever you are!

Circle of Friends

We've joined together as classmates
as the new year begins...
A year full of learning
while we become friends.
We'll share and be kind
as we work and we play.
And our friendship will grow
with each passing day.

Good Friends

           A good friend
            Plays with you,
            Laughs with you,
            Shares with you,
            Talks with you,
            Listens to you,
            And NEVER,
            Tells your secrets
            To anyone!

With A Friend
by Vivian Gould

I can talk with a friend
and walk with a friend
and share my umbrella in the rain.
I can play with a friend
and stay with a friend
and learn with a friend
and explain.
I can eat with a friend
and compete with a friend
and even sometimes disagree.
I can ride with a friend
and take pride with a friend.
A friend can mean so much to me!
Make new friends
But keep the old
One is sliver and the other gold
Circle round
That has no end
That's how long I want to be your friend!

Hug o’ War
by Shel Silverstein

I will not play at tug o'war
I'd rather play at hug o'war
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug
Where everyone kisses
And everyone grins
And everyone cuddles
And everyone wins.

Others Are Special
by Lois Raebeck

Oh, I'm very special as you can see,
but many other people are special like me
There's mother and father, and
sister and brother, and
uncle and aunt and
grandma and grandpa and
friends at school.
Friends at school!
All are special like me and you.

My Friend
by Jane S. Zion

My friend is nice.
We like to play
We play together every day.
We laugh and cry
And laugh again
Because, you see, we're

I have a friend
Whose name is (__________ )
And we have fun together.
We laugh and play
And sing all day
In any kind of weather.

by Langston Hughes

I loved my friend
He went away from me
There's nothing more to say
The poem ends,
Soft as it began-
I loved my friend.
Friends care
Friends share
We need friends
I am Somebody!
I'm a peacemaker, not a troublemaker
I'm friendly, kind, and forgiving
I'm strong and willing
Teach me and I'll learn
Help me and I'll grow
I am somebody!

Different Folks

The kids I know are really neat
One's named Sue and One's named Pete,
Some of them are big and round
Some I know are upside down!
I know some kids, black and white,
Some are sad and some are bright,
Some are short and some are tall.
There are those, but that's not all!
I knew a polka dotted kid!
You think I'm kidding, but I did!
I knew a green kid for a day!
But, her green went away!
I made a brand new friend
In my first grade class today.
My friend's name is _____
And together we'll learn and play.
_____ sits at my table,
and _____ does, too.
_____ sits right next to me,
Who sits next to you?

Children of the Rainbow

Dancing, singing, let's join hands!
Every child understands
Each one's color is just right
To make our world all rainbow bright.

A Different Language

I met a little girl
Who came from another land.
I couldn't speak her language
but I took her by the hand.
We danced together,
Had such fun
Dancing is a language
You can speak with everyone.

Everybody has a name

Has a name.
Some are different,
Some, the same.
Some are short,
Some are long.
All are right,
None are wrong.
My name is ____________.
It's special to me.
It's exactly who
I want to be!

About ME
By Shirley C. Granahan

I am me.  I may be small,
But someday I know I'll be tall.
I may not be like all the rest,
But I think being ME is the best.
I like my eyes.  I like my face!

I like each hair of mine in place!
I like who I am.
I like being me.
For I'm somebody SPECIAL...
There's no one like me!

My School Promise

Each day I'll do my best
And I won't do any less.
My work will always please me,
And I won't accept a mess.
I'll color very carefully,
My writing will be neat.
And I will not be happy,
Until my papers are complete.
I'll always do my homework,
And try my best on every test.
I won't forget my promise,
To do my very best!

Important Rules

Here are some rules for you and me,
See how important rules can be.
Always be honest, be kind and fair,
Always be good and willing to share.
These are rules we all should know,
We follow these rules wherever we go.

Rules Rap

Rules can be helpful,
Rules can be good.
They help us behave,
The way we should.
We follow the rules,
And we don’t do wrong.
The world’s a happier place
When we all get along.

 Russell Hoban

 Summer goes, summer goes
Like the sand between my toes
 When the waves go out
 That's how summer pulls away,
 Leaves me standing here today,
 Waiting for the bus.

 Summer brought, summer brought
All the frogs that I have caught
 Frogging at the pond,
Hot dogs, flowers, shells and rocks,
Postcards in my postcard box -
 Places far away.

 Summer took, summer took
All the lessons in my book,
 Blew them far away.
 I forgot the things I knew -
 Arithmetic and spelling, too,
 Never thought about them.

 Summer's gone, summer's gone -
 Fall and winter coming on,
 Frosty in the morning.
Here's the school bus right on time.
I'm not really sad that I'm
 Going back to school.

My Lunch
A candy bar.
A piece of cake.
A lollipop.
A chocolate shake.

A jelly donut.
Chocolate chips.
Some gummy worms
and licorice whips.

A candy cane.
A lemon drop.
Some bubblegum
and soda pop.

Vanilla wafers.
Orange punch.
My mom slept in
while I made lunch.

Something I Need to Remember
Kenn Nesbitt

There's something I need to remember.
But somehow it seems I forgot.
I'll sit here until I recall it.
I won't move an inch from this spot.

Is sleeping the thing I've forgotten?
Did I not remember to eat?
Did I take a shower this morning?
Is all of my homework complete?

Should I be at home or at school?
Or watching a show on TV?
Are some of my friends coming over?
Is somebody waiting for me?

And why am I sitting here thinking,
not moving an inch from this spot?
I'm sure that there must be a reason,
but somehow it seems I forgot.

My name is Mrs. Griffin
I'll be your teacher soon.
I can't wait to meet you,
And show you your new room.

There's lots to learn in 3rd grade,
And lots of things to do.

For a special kid like you!
