Welcome Students and Parents!
We warmly welcome our NEW Reading Series Treasures! LRES is really looking forward to the exciting stories and differentiated tools this program provides us! In addition to this program, your child will be part of BOOK CLUB!
Book Clubs consist of between 4 and 5 students each that are all reading the same novel. Instead of simply reading the story and answering questions, each student has a responsibility for the group. The responsibilities or "roles" that your child may have include the following:
Connector- If your child is the connector, they have the responsibility of connecting to the story in some way and sharing that connection with the rest of the group. Their connection should be written neatly on their role sheet, and brought with them to book club in a week.
Artful Artist- If your child has been selected as the artful artist, they are responsible for drawing a picture or making a sketch of some section of the story they have read. Some examples of what your child could draw may include : the setting, characters, your child's favorite part of the story, etc... I am not grading your child on how well they can draw- but will be graded on the effort put into the drawing.
Word Wizard- If your child is the word wizard, their role is to keep an eye out for words that are unfamiliar or strange. Once the student finds these words, he/she is to write the word down, the page number, and the paragraph number. The student must then look up the word in the dictionary and explain why they have chosen that word.
Passage Picker- If your child was chose to the be passage picker, they have the responsibility of choosing a passage they would like to read aloud to the group the next time book club meets. They should be choosing passages that either interest them, made them laugh, was their favorite part of the story, etc. Students will be responsible for explaining why they chose the passage they did.
Discussion Director- If your child is the discussion director, they are responsible for creating discussion questions to ask the class. These questions do not need to be difficult questions, but questions that entail different points of views. For example, a discussion director's question could be as simple as "What was your favorite part of the section we read?"
Along with your child's specific responsibility, they will also be responsible for summarizing each section of the book assigned. I will be assigning about 1/3 of the novel a week. The rubric your child will be scored on is below:
Reading: (5 points)
Your child read all of the pages that was assigned for the week.
