DU Lacrosse '92

Youth:

I grew up right here in south Denver and was educated in the DPS. I attended University Park (gr. 1-3)Elementary, Columbine Elementary (bussing gr. 4-6), Merrill Middle School (gr. 7-8), and South High School (gr. 9-12). In my youth I played soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, football, lacrosse and percussion (snare, set, tympani, conga). In high school I played varsity soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse. After earning an All-American award in lacrosse, I attended The University of Denver on an athletic scholarship. Check out the pictures of little league, high school, and college. See if you can pick out Coach Welch as a kid!

College Athletics:

I was very lucky to play four years of Division I Lacrosse, earning First Team All-League my final 3 years. I was named MVP my sophomore year, and captain my junior and senior years. We played in the RMLL Championship game my senior year losing to CU. Some college lacrosse pictures are posted on this site under "slideshow".

Coaching:

I've coached lacrosse at every level starting from 2nd-7th graders (Creek Indians), 5th grade (Steele Stallions summer league), middle schoolers (St. Anne's Episcopal), high school (South High Denver), and college (University of Denver)

Lessons in Life:

The lessons of discipline, commitment, teamwork, communication, dedication, euphoria, heartbreak, sacrifice, and friendship I hold very dear. I cannot imagine not playing sports in my youth, high school, throughout college, and still today. Sports, with the exception of my family, is the largest piece keeping me on-track and focused toward attaining my goals (past, present, and future) and staying physically and mentally healthy.

Higher Education:

B.S.B.A. Business Management, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver ('94)

M.A. Curriculum and Instruction, Mortgridge College of Education, University of Denver ('05)

Physical Education Endorsement, Metropolitan State College ('05)

Colorado Teaching License endorsed in both Elementary Education (K-6) and Physical Education (K-12)

Family:

My mother and my brother (with his family) still reside in the Washington Park Neighborhood. My neice, Annie Welch, is a second grader at Steele. I enjoy teaching her and look forward to her younger brother Rowan coming next year.

My family resides in the University Park neighborhood. I am lucky to live very close to Observatory Park (one of these days I am going to see if I can drive a golf ball far enough to clear Evans and land in the park). My wife is a hair stylist/colorist in the Bonnie Brae area, and a fantastic photographer on the side. Marni and I welcomed the arrival of a bouncing baby boy February '08 named Brady (I realize the Patriots were undefeated and headed toward the Super Bowl, but he is not named after Tom Brady). He is the joy of our lives, and Marni is the greatest mother in the world! We have a 9 year old Golden Retriever named Woody who is very special to us.

Hobbies:

Our family loves a variety of activities that take us outdoors- hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, wingsuit basejumping, snowboarding, tennis, mountain biking, cruising Brady around town "en velo", fishing, teaching ourselves how to garden, cooking, music (Marni is a pianist and I play percussion). And of course all of this includes our dog Woody!

Additional:

I own and operate a dog walking and pet sitting business named "Teacher's Pet" servicing University Park, Platte Park, Bonnie Brae, Washington Park, Cory/Merrill, University Hills, and Wellshire Hills neighborhoods.
