Genre:  Folktale

A traditional story with a moral or lesson handed down by people of a region from one generation to the next.

Story Skill: Cause and Effect

Cause and effect is the relationship between two things when one makes something else happen.  The cause is why something happens and the effect is what happens because of the cause.  There can be more than one cause or effect in a cause and effect relationship.  Sometimes the cause and effect can be directly stated.  At other times the reader must make an inference, or read between the line, to discover the cause and effect relationship.  To help identify cause and effect relationships the reader should look for signal words such as:  because, so, so that, if......then, consequently, thus, since, for, for this reason, as a result of, therefore, due to, this is how, nevertheless, or accordingly.
