Coronado Bowling History
Coronado Bowling History The Cougar bowling teams began in 2001 along with Coronado's first year as a new school. That year, the women Cougars proved to be one of the strongest teams in Clark County as they went into the play-offs as the second seed behind Green Valley. In the first game of their match with Green Valley the Cougars had the lead until the 10th frame before succumbing. Green Valley did not lose a game that season and our women came the closest to defeat them. In our second season, both the men and women teams begans to reach the play-offs and became two of the top teams each year. The men won their first match and then lost a heart-breaker to Eldorado during the second night of the play-offs at the Orlean's Bowling Center. The 2003-2004 season brought about a state championship for the men's team with the final night resulting in the Cougars tying the record for the highest score posted in a championship match. The men defeated Green Valley in an intense match for the region title and then went on to conquer Palo Verde for the state crown. In 2004-2005, both the men and women Cougars advanced to the state title match with the women vying against Bonanza and the men battling Clark High School. The women bowled above their team average, but, their opponents did the same and took the state trophy. The men split the first two games with Clark and then pulled away in the final game to capture their second consecutive state championship. The 2005-2006 season proved to be the women Cougars breakthrough year as they vied for their first state championship. Both the men and women Cougars fielded strong teams during the season and went into the play-offs as top seeds. The men won a close match against Boulder City on the first night, but, fell to Green Valley in a high scoring match on the second night. The women also had a close match the first night, but, then went on to dominate the rest of the week and claimed their first state title when they defeated Centennial High School in the title match. The conclusion of the 2006-2007 season brought forth a second striaght state title for the Cougar women when they defeated Palo Verde High School by a score of 7 to 0 at the Orlean's Bowling Center. The women had an amazing season in that not only were they undefeated in every match, but, they did not lose a single game throughout all of their matches in the season and in the play-offs. During the regular season, they averaged 188 per bowler per game and during the play-offs increased that to an outstanding 192 per bowler per game average. Their season saw scores and totals that may stand for a long time in the state of Nevada and possibly throughout the country. In the 2007-2008 season, the Cougar women continued their torrid bowling as they captured their third straight Nevada Championship Title. The women once again were undefeated with an 18-0 record including the play-offs and for the past two seasons did not lose even a single game which resulted in a run of 108 straight games without a loss. In the final title match against Clark High School, anchor April Urban bowled an 808 series, a Nevada state record and the first time a female high school bowler has cracked the 800 mark. The women also had totaled more pins than the high men's team during the week, just as they had done the previous year. It was an amazing run for the lady cougars and they set records that may never be broken. The JV women also had their second straight undefeated season and look to continue their outstanding bowling next season for the lady cougars. The Cougar men returned to the play-offs after a one year lapse and got off to a successful start on the first night of the week when they defeated Chaparral High School. The second night against Green Valley was competitive, but, the men lost 5-2. The men are poised to make another run at state in the coming season. The JV men had a successful year as they posted a 12-2 record and the bowlers showed a twenty pin increase on their averages as the season wore on.
