Subway station enroute to Columbia University, NY, 2009

Each year I provide opportunities for staff members from both The Roar and The Prowl to travel to other cities to attend JEA (Journalism Educators of America) or CSPA (Columbia Scholastic Press Assoc.) journalism conventions. These trips allow students to take classes taught by industry professionals, to network with other journalism and publications students, and to investigate new cultural environments. Additionally, if the city is home to a college or university, I try to include it in the itinerary.

Over the past four years we have traveled to Nashville, TN; Philadelphia, PA; Anaheim, CA; and New York City, NY (twice). The trips are always great fun in addition to being a wonderful learning experience.

Due to the poor economy, I had to cancel the fall trip to Washington, D.C., one of the most exciting cities for reporters to visit, but the good news is there is a JEA convention in Portland, OR in April to which I am hoping to bring students.
