Ch. 4 Lesson 1 Study Guide

1.           What areas of China did we learn about?

     North China Plain, Guangxi Zhungzu, Huang River, Tibetan Plateau.

2.           Describe the Tibetan Plateau.

    The land is very rocky and is surrounded by mountain ranges; called the Roof of the World.

3.           Why is China called a land of differences?

Because of its diverse (different) landscapes.  It has plains, mountains, valleys, rivers, deserts, costal areas, and different climates depending on where you live.

4.           Why is the Huang River yellow?

Yellow silt is dissolved in the river water.

5.           Why is the Huang River called China’s Sorrow?  Because the Huang River has flooded and takes away life, homes, and crops.

6.           What did the Chinese build to control flooding?  levees.

1.  What was an important product of the Zhou economy?silk

2.  What inventions improved daily life in ancient China? projects to control flooding, iron used to make tools and weapons, new system of money, and domestication.

3.  Why did Shi Huangdi build the Great Wall of China?

to protect the empire from northern invaders.

4.  What were the achievements made during the Han Dynasty? taxes, building new roads improved transportation,  valued contributions of scholars such as the first complete history of China was written, and civil service exams for government jobs.

5.  What helped unite Chinese culture during the Han Dynasty?  advancement in transportation which led to advancement in trade.

6.  What was invented during the Han Dynasty?

Ink, paper, bamboo slips, and porcelain

7.  How did the Bronze Age receive its name?

During the Shang Dynasty tools, cups, weapons, and other trade goods were made of bronze.  Bronze is made by melting copper and tin.

8.  Why is the Zhou Dynasty referred to as the Golden Age? Because the economy was strong because of trade and new system of money.  The government worked on large projects such as canals and irrigation systems.  Education grew and people used iron to make tools and weapons.  Women's rights were introduced.  Zhou Dynasty lasted the longest.
