Parts of a Plant

Welcome to our Newest Unit:

 Plants!

This unit was designed to be taught in the Library to Second Grade classes to align with lessons from the Second Grade Science textbook.  It is hoped that by integrating Library lessons with Science lessons, students will retain more of the information and see the link between classroom activities and library resources.

Week One

We'll find out that plants are living things and what they need to help them live and grow.  We'll start growing our own plants from bean seeds.

Books:  Plant Growth

All Kinds of Plants

Where do Plants Grow

Are Trees Alive?

Week Two

We will identify the parts of a plant and find out what the parts do.  Maybe we'll see some of those parts on our seeds!

Books:  Plant Plumbing

At the Root of It

Catching Sunlight

A Seed is Sleepy

Week Three

We will learn how plants grow.  We'll use the computer to watch a movie about plant life cycles and then make our own life cycle diagrams.  Our bean plants are now seedlings!

Plant Packages

The Tiny Seed

Diary of a Sunflower

Life Cycle of an Apple

Plant Parts

Zinnia’s Flower Garden

Week Four

We will talk about all the different ways we use plants and how they help us.  We'll take our new bean plants home.
