Instructor:  Mrs. Sprague

Materials:  None (at this time)           Class Fee:  $6

General Information:

Make sure you bring something to write with (pen or pencil—there may be times you will have to write or make notes).  Also, bring some notepaper to write down any notes or instructions.  Of course, most of your work will be done on the computer and printed.

You are to concentrate on technique and/or speed.  Keep typing the warm-up until I tell you to stop.  (This instruction may change if you do the MicroType drills on your own.  We will see…..)  Once in class, DO NOT ask to go to your locker or the restroom, and DON’T put on your make-up or comb your hair in class….Please!

MOST of the time, assignments will be due at the end of the class period.  If you don’t get done (for whatever reason, short of computer problems) you will be graded on what you have printed out (speed is part of our goal).

DO NOT THROW PAPER, PENS, BOOKS, ETC!!!

You must be in the room by the time the tardy bell rings…. (that means NOT standing out in the hall and then wandering in when the bell rings).  You have plenty of time—you should be ready to type when the tardy bell rings.

No chewing gum.  No eating or drinking (candy, food, pop,  etc.)

You will have a warning for ONE tardy the entire semester.  Any further tardies will result in a detention.  (Punctuality is important!)

At the end of the class, you will be instructed to print out your assignment.  All you need to do is choose File, then Print.  The computer will do the rest.  Put your papers in the designated wire baskets in the front of the room.  (Of course, make sure you have typed your name and class period at the beginning of your paper!)

You will be graded on technique, timings, in-class assignments, and written tests.  In this day of the computer, it is important for all to know how to type (or keyboard—the new correct term now that we are using computers!)  I will teach you proper technique and set-up for your documents.  With time and practice, you will be able to type efficiently, with accuracy and speed.  This is not a tough class, and there is no homework; you should be able to enjoy the class and get a good grade if you do all of the assignments (and do them properly!).  Work with me and we all will have a good semester!

Top 10 Goals of Keyboarding Instruction

"In our elementary keyboarding classroom," Craig Nansen told Education World, "we have a sign that lists the top ten goals of keyboarding instruction:

  1. Technique
  2. Technique
  3. Technique
  4. Technique
  5. Technique
  6. Technique
  7. Technique
  8. Technique
  9. Accuracy
  10. Speed

"Keyboarding is a motor skill," Nansen noted. "It is a matter of training fingers to respond correctly and quickly to press the correct key -- kind of like in athletics where you keep doing it over and over again until it becomes habit.
